IHOP is Giving Away Free Pancakes – For a Good Cause

Every year, IHOP celebrates National Pancake Day by giving away a short stack of pancakes, for free, to everyone who comes to their restaurants. They ask that you leave a donation for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. This year, Free Pancake Day is on February 28, 2012. IHOP is an abbreviation for International House of Pancakes. The restaurant serves more than just pancakes, but it is their pancakes that made them famous. In addition to several varieties of pancakes, IHOP has other breakfast items on their menu. They also have selections that are more appropriate for lunch or dinner, if that … Continue reading

On This Day in History – February 13 – February 17

Looking for fun ideas for your homeschool this week? Give these a try. February 13th – on this date in 1991, the original manuscript of Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn was found. Read excerpts of this story aloud, or, if you have younger children, tell them a simplified version. Lash together a raft of sticks and thread, and float it in your bathtub. February 14th – of course today is Valentine’s Day, but many other important things of note have taken place. For instance, on this day in 1920, the League of Women Voters was formed, which changed the face of … Continue reading

Food, Favors and Decorations to Complete Your Family Election Party

My last blog outlined invitations and possible activities for an Election Day (or Night) Party. This blog will help you prepare for the party. Favors/Name Tags Make name tags/favors in which the name is on a white circle of cardstock. Folded loops of ribbon be glued to the back of the cardstock around the edges of the circle. Leave two ribbons (hanging down. This resembles the rosette ribbons worn by members of political parties in England (hence the term, “showing your colors”). If it’s just a family party, rather than names you could make ribbons of different countries and write … Continue reading

Celebrate Election Day with Cake

Why not? Our ancestors did for centuries. According to the Culinary Institute of America (CIA), back in the 1800’s voters had to travel great distances to get to polling places. When they finally arrived they were welcomed with a slice of cake. Back then Election Day Cake was a 10-pound (plus) fruitcake made with yeast and whole wheat flour. These days the same cake probably wouldn’t be considered a treat, though that hasn’t stopped the CIA from coming up with a similar recipe for this year’s election. Their version (see recipe below) is a healthy bundt cake, which includes dried … Continue reading

Celebrating 3, Part 2

Last year Jessie turned two. Turning two was a big deal in our house. Five days after Jessie turned two we adopted her. Her first foster parents came to her first birthday party, but were unable to come to her second. We didn’t invite them to her third. Because of the adoption, both sets of grandparents were there to celebrate turning two with Jessie. This year the grandparents broke their visits up so each could spend time with Miss Jess. My parents arrived four days apart; Dad wanted to give Mom more time alone with us. They were here on … Continue reading
